As soon as you get serious about making a transition in your career, one of the first things you probably think about is whether or not your resume is ready. The problem is that it might be hard to tell, if you’re not a professional career coach or resume writer. There have been a lot of significant changes over the past 15 years when it comes to resumes, and if your job doesn’t involve staying on top of the trends, you may have some questions about how to create a modern resume that attracts opportunities.

You can google “sample resume” for hours on end, only to end up more confused than you started! There is certainly no shortage of resume tips, advice, and opinions available, but knowing whether or not you should trust the advice you find is another question. Without having the insight of a career professional who is familiar with best practices and current trends, it’s a guessing game. The best you can do is try it out and see what results you get.

Often clients come to me after they’ve been applying to job after job, but not getting called for interviews. They tell me they’ve submitted their resume for positions they are clearly qualified for, but they aren’t even getting any responses, and they want to know why.

Maybe you’ve experienced this same frustration. You spend hours and hours applying to jobs online, but you’re still waiting to get your first interview.

You may have done a great job describing your past roles, and you may have held some impressive positions. But it might actually be less about what’s on your resume now, and more about what’s not on your resume!

Maybe you’ve experienced this same frustration. You spend hours and hours applying to jobs online, but you’re still waiting to get your first interview.

Throughout my career, I’ve helped well over 1000 job seekers revamp their resumes, and this is a common mistake I’ve seen again and again.

So, what is it that’s missing?

While your resume does need to describe the work you’ve done, what it ultimately needs to do is highlight your impact on the company. Hiring managers are not looking only for experience in a certain role; they are looking for people who will contribute to the mission of their organization. Your expertise is needed to enable the team to achieve their purpose and exceed their goals, and the recruiter wants to be able to visualize this when they look at your resume.

One reason this is challenging is that throughout your career it’s easy to get focused on the tasks in front of you and get lost in the everyday duties you’re responsible for. You can get so consumed with the urgent needs you face that you lose sight of the bigger picture. When that happens, you miss the impact your work is having on the team or organization.

It’s difficult to highlight the way you’ve contributed to the company if you haven’t taken the time to identify your impact.

Look at your resume and ask yourself if it shows the value of the contributions you’ve made to your current or past employers. If not, that may be the missing element that’s preventing you from getting the interviews you want.
